Abia State emerged champions of the maiden South East Amateur Boxing Championship held in Umuahia, dominating the three-day competition with a total of 13 medals made up of eight gold, three silver and two bronze .

Enugu State finished second with four gold, four silver and one bronze medal, while Imo State claimed third place with one gold, one silver and five bronze medals. Anambra and Ebonyi States finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The championship featured six male and seven female weight categories and produced a series of highly competitive bouts. Abia asserted its dominance in the men’s 60kg, 65kg and 70kg divisions through the performances of John, Chidiebere Chukwuemeka and Iheke Okechukwu, who all secured gold medals.

In the women’s events, Abia also excelled as Victor Sarah (51kg), Ola Ogbonna (59kg), Joseph Blessed (60kg), Chisara Augustine (70kg) and Ocheze Nwokocha (75kg) won gold medals in their respective categories.

At the close of the tournament, the victorious boxers were rewarded with cash prizes, medals and certificates, bringing an end to a successful and entertaining championship in the Abia State capital.
