The Board of the Abia State Athletics Association was inaugurated on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at the Indoors Sports Hall of the Umuahia Township Stadium.
The Athletics Association Board was among the 35 inaugurated by His Excellency, Engr. Ikechi Emetu, Deputy Governor of Abia State who represented the Governor, Dr Alex Otti.
Deputy Governor Engr. Emetu expressed confidence in the board and charged them to produce athletes who would make the state proud. Responding, Chairman, Abia State Athletics Association Victor Okorie thanked the Governor for visionary leadership, the Deputy Govenor and the Commissioner for Sports for their roles in advancing the project.
“On behalf of the Abia State Athletics Association, I wish to express my profound gratitude to His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the development of sports in our great state,” he said.
“Your directive mandating the Deputy Governor to inaugurate all Abia State Sports Associations is a clear testament to the high priority your administration places on sports. It signals the beginning of a new era marked by structure, purpose, and progressive growth.
“I also extend my sincere appreciation to the Deputy Governor and the Honourable Commissioner for Sports for their instrumental roles in advancing this laudable initiative,” he added.
The board promised to show the dedication to drive Abia State as number one in Athletics in Nigeria, in line with the goals of Governor Alex Otti, OFR.
