William Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from the national team.
The defender announced this on his social media pages.
“onoured. Grateful. Forever a Super Eagle.
“Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will.
“Here’s to the next chapter,” he said on his official Facebook page.
Ekong represented the Netherlands at age grade level but switched nationality to represent Nigeria at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio where Nigeria won the bronze medal. Stephen Keshi gave him his senior debut for Nigeria on June 13, 2025 in an AFCON qualifying match against Chad.
He played for the Super Eagles at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, and played in three AFCON tournaments, winning bronze in the 2019 edition and silver in the 2023 edition where Nigeria lost to hosts, Cote d’Ivoire in the final. He was later named player of the tournament.
He had 83 caps for the Super Eagles and made history by becoming the defender with the highest number of goals at the AFCON (5).
His list game for the Super Eagles was the World Cup playoffs against DR Congo which the Super Eagles lost on penalties, thereby missing out of the expanded 2026 World Cup.
