Portugal are champions of the FIFA U17 World Cup after a 1-0 victory over Austria on Thursday.

Benfica forward, Anisio Cabral scored in the 32nd minute after a fine cross from Duarte Cunha. The tournament was the first of the expanded FIFA U17 World Cup tournaments.

Portugal had not qualified for the previous nine editions of the tournament since 2003 and they returned in style after 22 years. The European champions, coached by Joao Santos beat Belgium, Mexico, Switzerland and Brazil in the knockout stages before the thrilling final in Doha.

It was Cabral’s seventh goal of the tournament, just one behind the tournament’s Golden Ball winner, Johannes Moser of Austria.

It is Portugal’s first U17 title and Austria’s first time in the final of the world cup. In the third place game, Italy beat Brazil 4-2 on penalties to go home with bronze.
