Amnesty International has condemned the alleged killing of at least 9 people at the new cattle market in Omumauzor in Abia State. In a statement on their Twitter handle, the organization described the killings as unacceptable

“Amnesty International condemns the killing of at least 9 people at the new Abia cattle market in Omuma Uzo, Ukwa West council area on Tuesday 15th February 2022. The killings are unacceptable and perpetrators must be brought to justice.

Our investigation shows that at least 9 people were killed (shot, butchered, and burnt) and at least 60 persons displaced”.

The Abia State Government had since safeguarded the area through the help of security agencies. However, Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the crime

“Amnesty International is calling on the Nigerian authorities to investigate this crime, to ensure that the victims get justice. Authorities must do mor to live upto their international obligations to protect lives and property.”
